The first international legal manual for attorneys defending individuals facing the death penalty was released in June during the 5th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Madrid. The congress reported that 58 countries now enforce the death penalty.

The manual, developed in conjunction with Northwestern University School of Law’s Center for International Human Rights, is intended to assist capital punishment abolitionists in countries with limited resources, said John Koneck, president of Minneapolis-based Fredrikson & Byron, whose lawyers assisted in drafting the handbook.
