SACRAMENTO — A bipartisan pair of state lawmakers has introduced legislation aimed at blocking the federal government from gathering mass data about Californians without a warrant.

Senate Bill 828 by Joel Anderson, R–San Diego, and Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, would bar government entities—including cities and counties—as well as state contractors from “materially supporting” a federal agency “in collecting electronic data or metadata of any person pursuant to any action … not based on a warrant.” The bill would also prohibit warrantless records from being used in a state or local criminal investigation.
