SACRAMENTO — The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit on Tuesday struck down same-sex marriage bans in Nevada and Idaho, concluding that the states’ laws cannot withstand the heightened scrutiny standard the appellate court adopted in SmithKline Beecham v. Abbott Laboratories.

The unanimous ruling follows Monday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to let stand appellate rulings that effectively conferred marriage rights to same-sex couples in 11 states.
