Hyundai and Kia have agreed to pay a record $100 million in civil penalties to resolve allegations they violated the federal Clean Air Act by misstating the fuel efficiency of their vehicles.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed the agreement on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board accused Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp. and related companies of selling nearly 1.2 million cars that emitted approximately 4.75 metric tons of greenhouse gases beyond what the companies reported to officials.
