SAN FRANCISCO — Lyft Inc.’s novel business model is causing headaches for a federal judge trying to decide whether its drivers are employees or contractors.

On Thursday U.S. District Judge Vince Chhabria of the Northern District of California said he was “scratching his head” over what to do with a potential class of Lyft drivers who claim the company failed to provide mandated employee benefits.
