So far in 2015, at least two major global firms—Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and King & Wood Mallesons—have opened offices in Singapore. They will find themselves in a crowded market with a large contingent of foreign lawyers. At last count this past spring, 135 global firms had operations in Singapore, and the most recent NLJ 350 head count survey ranked the island 12th in the world for total number (487) of expat Am Law 200 lawyers on the ground, just behind Munich.

The allure is obvious: Singapore boasts a strategic location off the Malay Peninsula, a local population that’s highly proficient in English and an all-around reputation for being an easy place to do business. Plus, there’s good food, glittering skyscrapers and gorgeous Marina Bay.
