King & Spalding last Friday officially opened in Tokyo, two months after poaching four partners from U.K. firm Ashurst.

Japan is the Atlanta-headquartered firm’s second base in Asia after first arriving in Singapore in 2010. Former Ashurst Tokyo partners John McClenahan, Mark Davies and Chris Bailey have all started, with McClenahan now serving as managing partner of the office. Former Ashurst partner Rupert Lewi, previously based in Perth, Australia, will relocate to Tokyo next month. The firm expects to have 11 lawyers in the office by year’s end, once associates are hired to support the new team.
