U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg introduced her order closing down the Georgia Aquarium’s bid to secure 18 beluga whales from Russia with a quotation inscribed on the entry wall of the aquarium’s Ocean Voyager exhibit: “The oceans deserve our respect and care, but you have to know something before you can care about it.”
The statement is credited to Dr. Sylvia Earle, former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a marine mammal conservationist. But Earle was one of a group of scientists and conservationists who filed a friend-of-the court brief supporting federal regulators who barred the aquarium from importing the Russian whales.
