The Kentucky Supreme Court has sided with the nation’s largest tort reform groups seeking to uphold a general rule that companies sued over products that meet government regulatory standards shouldn’t be subjected to punitive damages.

Groups including the American Tort Reform Association and the DRI filed amicus briefs in a case alleging that Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. designed and failed to warn of a seat belt that is defective when worn by someone heavier than the 171-pound dummies used in federally mandated safety tests.
