Richard Rainey loved being the executive counsel for global intellectual property litigation at General Electric Co. But after nearly four years, Rainey says, “I am just a litigator who missed litigation.”

So on Oct. 19 Rainey rejoined his old law firm, Covington & Burling, as a partner in its 140-lawyer IP practice. And the change had nothing to do with recent changes at GE, where longtime general counsel Brackett Denniston III is retiring and Alex Dimitrief is replacing him on Nov. 1.
