U.S. companies, particularly startups, often fail to protect their intellectual property through product development agreements when they outsource product development in China. This is a “big mistake,” according to a recent blog post by attorneys at Harris & Moure.

The authors say beware of Chinese manufacturers who offer to do product development work for free. “Chinese manufacturers usually prefer to cover all of the costs of product development because they want to own the resulting product,” they write. Not realizing this, U.S. companies often make the mistake of agreeing, figuring they can save money in the short term.
