Kirkland & Ellis refused to allow private equity and M&A partner Frank Sun in Hong Kong to leave for Latham & Watkins last month until he repaid a $120,000 bonus, said a source knowledgeable about the matter.

The source, who spoke with sibling publication Legal Week on the condition of anonymity, said that Sun paid back the bonus personally in order to make the move to Latham in Hong Kong. Latham subsequently reimbursed Sun in full.
