President Bush, nearing the end of his search for a successor to retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, has whittled his list to a handful of candidates and could announce his decision by week’s end.

“He is moving forward in a very thorough and deliberate way,” White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Wednesday. “He is doing his homework and thinking very carefully about this decision. … He’s going to nominate someone we can all be proud of and someone who is highly qualified and someone will represent the American people well on the United States Supreme Court.”
