When most people think of federal appellate practices, Washington, D.C. springs to mind. But one Los Angeles-based law firm wants to change that. Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges, a 240-attorney commercial litigation shop, has solid credentials: at least one nine-figure verdict for the past three years and, with profits per partner of $1.9 million, in 2004 was the most profitable firm in the city according to the Los Angeles Business Journal. Firm leaders are confident that they can break into the group of sought-after national appellate firms.

When planning to launch an appellate department, name partners John Quinn and A. William Urquhart sought a department head who would enhance the reputation of the firm (chiefly known for its intellectual property work). They also wanted someone who could reassure big clients that their firm is able to take their cases all the way up the appellate ladder — to the Supreme Court if need be — and prevail. If that department head is prominent enough to attract clients independently, jackpot.
