With the 2006 hurricane season less than three months away, nervous Maryland lawmakers are worried that they would be setting up their constituents for huge clean-up costs and rate increases if they approve the $11.5 billion acquisition of Constellation Energy Group Inc., the state’s primary utility, by Florida Power & Light Co.

Members from both houses of Maryland’s General Assembly fear that FPL’s poor track record in responding to past hurricanes and the all-but-certain repairs associated with the next hurricane season could hit state ratepayers too hard.
