The vast majority of government agencies and businesses that ran afoul of federal disability laws were brought around by mediation rather than enforcement, according to a report issued Thursday by the Justice Department.
In the past five years, an estimated 1,800 complaints out of 2,000 cases filed were resolved amicably through mediation, the Justice Department said. The department’s civil rights division also settled 151 cases against state and local governments to force them to comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
