A group of manufacturers, distributors and suppliers of benzene has asked a Wisconsin judge to dismiss a suit claiming the chemical caused nine former tire-factory workers to get cancer. The suit alleges that workers at a now-closed Uniroyal Goodrich plant were exposed to dangerous levels of benzene, benzene derivatives, rubber solvents and other toxic chemicals. Defendants contend, among other things, that the products had proper warnings and that workers voluntarily used the chemicals knowing the risks.

A group of manufacturers, distributors and suppliers of a chemical used in the tire-making process has asked a judge to dismiss a lawsuit that claims the chemical caused some former Uniroyal Goodrich Tire Co. workers to get cancer.
The 16 defendants in the lawsuit, including Exxon Mobil Corp., Sun Petroleum Products Co., Texaco, Standard Oil Co., Shell Canada and Shell Chemical, submitted documents to Eau Claire (Wis.) County Circuit Judge Lisa Stark this week contending they did nothing wrong.
