Texans like playing to type. This is a state where Barnes & Noble has a separate section for football books and treadmills are pre-set for 200-pound giants. But Texans also like to surprise. On my tour of Texas for “The NLJ Visits” section [Sept. 13], I saw indoor ice-skating in Houston and indoor rock-climbing in Austin. I also found firms and associates with outsize personalities.

The Texans’ Texan award goes to plaintiffs’ powerhouse Baron & Budd, which, true to its name, has Bud on tap. The 70-lawyer Dallas firm runs through about a keg a week. All lawyers and staff are free to quaff beer any time after 5 p.m., and the firm holds keggers to celebrate major decisions helpful to asbestos plaintiffs.
