Tick, tick, tick. As the clock winds down New Year’s Eve, one million revelers are expected to watch the ball drop in Times Square. High above them, in the all-but-deserted offices of Proskauer Rose, four technicians will be watching other things. Call it faithful service to the firm, call it a bum pick of the draw, the team’s job is simple: Spend a weekend in a hotel, brave the crowds on the street, and when the clock strikes 12, watch Proskauer’s computers, telephones, and power lines. If the technical marvels of this century don’t quite make it into the next, the team will give them a push.

What a way to spend a weekend. “We’ll make it up to them,” promises Robert Rizzi, Proskauer’s executive director.
