I can’t remember a time when newspapers paid more attention to the legal profession than they have in the past few weeks, as they covered the spike in associate salaries. There’s been plenty of sneering, but precious little has been said about the far-reaching implications of the jump. That’s a shame, because just as Muhammad Ali’s first-round knockout of Sonny Liston forever changed the world of heavyweight boxing, this salary increase will permanently change the world of heavyweight law firms.
