On March 29, 2001, Alicia Bustos was a passenger in a Buick in Hialeah, Fla. The Buick was hit by a Ford Explorer while attempting to make a turn, gravely injuring Bustos. During the litigation that ensued, it was revealed that the Ford's driver was using a cell phone just before calling 911 to report the accident. Though the defense says the cell phone evidence was "a red herring," a Miami jury awarded the plaintiffs $20.98 million.
