After more than three years in a Navy brig as an “enemy combatant,” alleged al-Qaida operative Jose Padilla will begin constructing his defense as a civilian.

In a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court, Padilla was transferred Thursday from military to civilian custody and made his first appearance as a criminal defendant in court. He was scheduled to return Friday to enter a plea.
