Associates with large Texas firms presumably looked with envy at their counterparts at Houston’s Susman Godfrey, when the 76-lawyer litigation boutique paid year-end bonuses to its associates ranging from $86,000 to $150,000.

Those stunningly high bonuses — awarded in December 2005 because the litigation boutique’s financial performance for the year was second only to its best-ever results in 2004 — averaged 75 percent of each associate’s base pay at Susman Godfrey.
