A Montgomery County, Pa., jury has returned a defense verdict in a failure-to-diagnose case brought by a woman who later died of colon cancer at the age of 81.

Prior to his being sued in the case, gastroenterologist William Mahood had written a letter to Meye Bloom in which he apologized that a November 1999 colonoscopy had failed to identify her ultimately fatal tumor.
