The assignment was tricky: pick two Am Law 200 law firm Web sites and compare them as marketing tools. The firms had to be similar in assets and size. They both should illustrate the best in marketing with technology. I settled on an East Coast vs. West Coast challenge — Manatt Phelps & Phillips vs. Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman.
Compare the firms by the numbers. Both sites have heavy traffic, but Pillsbury has the lead, according to Alexa, Google and Yahoo. Every firm has an equal marketing chance on the Web because it’s a level playing field. What counts is knowledge of Web site usability, savvy marketeering and staying on top of the latest technology. However, both firms appear stuck in the last century by failing to have a blog or an RSS feed to which visitors can subscribe.
