Each year, a series of going-away parties always follows the distribution of the previous year’s bonus checks at the Big Firms.

Although not all departures are tied to bonus distributions — like a meager little sayonara happy hour I attended last week — no matter what the timing of the departure, the size and tenor of an associate’s going-away party says a lot about the lucky soul who’s headed out the door.
