A man who has spent 15 years in prison despite having a credible alibi for a Bronx murder will be set free unless the Bronx district attorney decides to retry him within 60 days.

In what he called an “exceptionally troubling” case, Southern District of New York Judge Lewis Kaplan said Jose Garcia was convicted because his lawyer’s performance “was well below minimal standards of competence.”
