Overseeing the legal issues in the combination of paper companies in South Carolina and Quebec was a lot like “herding cats,” said Troutman Sanders partner William C. “Cal” Smith.
Smith was the lead corporate adviser to Bowater on its merger agreement with Abitibi-Consolidated — a combination that will create North America’s third-largest publicly traded pulp and paper company. Bowater is in Greenville, S.C., and Abitibi is in Montreal.
