When Clarice M. Davis became the first female partner in 1979 at Dallas-based Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld there was no such expression as “partnership track.”

“In those days you came to work for a firm and looked each other over for a period of time,” says Davis, an insurance partner in the firm’s Dallas office. The amount of time involved was unspecified, she says.
