Faced with fourth and long in a 12-year legal battle with the National Football League, the Oakland Raiders saw their best argument batted down near the goal line Wednesday by the California Supreme Court.
If the court rules that way, it would mean no new trial for the Raiders in their $1.2 billion suit — and possibly a tougher standard of review when judges grant retrials without providing clearly articulated reasons.
