Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has opened its Beijing office with a partner recruited from British law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

Douglas Markel, a mergers and acquisitions lawyer, will head Simpson’s China practice out of Beijing, where he has practiced for 16 years. He had also led Freshfields’ China practice since last year and has represented both the Chinese government and multinational corporations in major transactions in the region.
