Two big companies turned to Cravath, Swaine & Moore this week to ward off unsolicited bids by rivals totaling nearly $100 billion in value.

Cravath is working with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in advising The Williams Companies on a $48 billion takeover offer by Dallas-based Energy Transfer Equity (ETE), according to sibling publication Texas Lawyer.

Williams, a Tulsa-based energy giant, said in a press release that a deal was contingent upon the target company abandoning its own previous bid to acquire Williams Partners LP for $13.8 billion. Williams also said the offer by ETE—counseled by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and Latham & Watkins—undervalued the company.
