Hausfeld and litigation funder Burford Capital are teaming up in a first-of-its-kind $30 million joint venture to bring cartel claims in Germany, both parties announced Wednesday.

The money will fund a brand new Berlin presence for Hausfeld, which until now has run its European antitrust practice from London and Brussels. The new outpost, Hausfeld Rechtsanwälte, is scheduled to launch by Jan. 1.

Anthony Maton, Hausfeld's London managing partner and one of the drivers of the new collaboration, said he hasn't seen another instance of a third-party litigation funder backing a law firm's expansion to a new jurisdiction. “But I do think this will become a trend,” he added.
