The strategic alliance announced two weeks ago between Richmond, Virginia-based McGuireWoods and a Chinese law firm is the latest attempt by an international firm to take a crack at China’s domestic legal market, which remains mostly closed to foreign firms.

McGuireWoods, which didn’t have a China office before setting up the alliance, will now rely on FuJae Partner, a new firm launched by three former Jun He Law Offices partners—Richard Yao, David Liu and Guangming Liu—on matters concerning Chinese law. This is only the second such arrangement, nearly nine years after McDermott Will & Emery set up a strategic alliance with MWE China Law Offices, which was founded by a group of lawyers from Allbright Law Offices.
