Roberta Kaplan, the former Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison litigator who successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act , is expanding her 1-year-old litigation boutique and rebranding the firm to include the name of a new hire from Debevoise & Plimpton. New York's Kaplan & Company is now Kaplan Hecker & Fink, adding former Debevoise white-collar partner Sean Hecker to the masthead along with co-founding partner Julie Fink. Kaplan left Paul Weiss to found the firm last July with Fink, another Paul Weiss veteran who was working in-house at Pfizer, and two other lawyers. With the addition of another new partner, Jenna Dabbs, a former federal prosecutor who most recently worked as senior counsel at Pershing Square Capital Management, the firm now boasts 14 attorneys. New York State Bar Association's highest honor I was expecting things to be good, but I've been surprised about how overwhelmingly positive it has been," she said. We got very lucky," she said. "He was thinking the exact thing I was at the same time." Hecker said he was also enticed by Kaplan's commitment to public-interest work. Along with representing clients such as Airbnb, Uber, Pfizer and Columbia University, the firm is representing 10 plaintiffs who sued 25 Nazi and white supremacist individuals and groups connected to the violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia, last August. It was very meaningful to me as a woman to have an opportunity to work at a boutique that was started by a woman—and one woman in particular, Robbie, who I've had the opportunity to observe from afar," Dabbs said. "She has worked on very important matters that have had a significant impact to her clients and the community."
