Just over a month after welcoming international arbitration partner J.P. Duffy to the firm, Reed Smith has added former Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer lawyer Ben Love to its roster as counsel in New York.
The firm's international arbitration practice leader, José Astigarraga, told The American Lawyer in May that he wanted to continue to expand the practice, and he appears to be sticking to that strategy. At Freshfields, Love was an associate in Paris and later New York.
In an interview Monday, Love said that he believes the existing Reed Smith platform and its plans for continued growth in the practice group were compelling factors. He said he has strong relationships with his clients and expects he will continue to maintain them.
“The firm's strategy to expand its global arbitration practice was one of the key elements that attracted me to Reed Smith,” Love added in a statement. “I look forward to working with José Astigarraga and my other Reed Smith colleagues to assist clients on their most complex and significant international disputes.”
According to the firm, Love had a prominent role in the Peace Pipeline arbitration arising from the cessation of gas supply from Egypt to Israel following the Arab Spring. Outcomes included a $1.3 billion arbitration award in the Cairo Regional Center for International Commercial Arbitration for EMG against Egypt's State oil and gas companies, as well as a $324 million award for EMG against those same companies in the International Chamber of Commerce.
“Ben is an exceptional addition to the firm as we continue the expansion of our arbitration practice globally,” Astigarraga said in a statement. “He's an excellent arbitration lawyer all-around, and his forte is investor-state arbitration. Our firm already has a strong investor-state practice in Europe, so his incorporation here in the U.S. makes a lot of strategic sense for us.”
Reed Smith's New York office managing partner Cindy Minniti said in a statement Monday, “Ben brings strong cross-border capabilities that will help us address the arbitration needs of diverse clients. We are delighted to further enhance our international dispute resolution capabilities with Ben's arrival.”
According to the firm, Reed Smith has been named to the Global Arbitration Review's list of top 30 international arbitration firms in the world. The firm also said in a release that it has added talent to the practice in Paris, Dubai, Singapore, Miami and other locations.
Prior to his tenure at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Love was an associate at King & Spalding and a trainee at Shearman & Sterling. He holds law degrees from both the University of Texas as well as the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne.
