Baker McKenzie marked the start of its new fiscal year by appointing new managing partners to its offices in Miami, Texas and Washington, D.C.
New York managing partner Scott Brandman, a tax attorney, now adds Miami to his responsibilities. In Texas, Bobby Albaral, who currently manages the Dallas office, now also oversees Houston. Litigator Maurice Bellan has taken the lead role in Washington.
The firm also announced that transactional IP lawyer Stephanie Vaccari will lead the firm's Toronto office starting on Oct. 1.
The moves also inject added diversity into Baker McKenzie's leadership ranks, a week after the global firm announced a six-year goal of ensuring its partnership included at least 40 percent women. In addition to promoting Vaccari, Bellan is African American.
A former criminal investigator and trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, Bellan most recently served as vice chairman of the firm's litigation and government enforcement practice. He succeeds international trade attorney Ted Murphy, who has led the Washington office since April 2017.
Brandman became managing partner of the firm's New York office at the start of 2018. The firm noted in its announcement that its New York and Miami lawyers both have a substantial hand in matters on behalf of clients doing work in Latin America. Litigator Bill Roppolo will serve as the firm's local lead partner in Miami. Bobby Moore, the previous managing partner in Miami, started in the role in July 2017.
Albaral, a tax attorney, was named Dallas managing partner in November 2017. Litigator Brendan Cook will now serve as local lead partner in Houston. Jonathan Newton previously led the Houston office.
Vaccari currently leads the Toronto office's industrial design and transactional IP team and co-leads its IP portfolio management and trademark enforcement teams. She will succeed Kevin Coon, who has led the Toronto office since 2012.
“Maurice, Scott, Bobby, Bill, Brendan and Stephanie will be outstanding leaders for our firm in these key North American markets,” Baker McKenzie North American CEO Colin Murray said in a statement. “Each of them is highly respected by colleagues and clients alike, and I look forward to working with them as we continue to further elevate our capabilities throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. I offer them my sincere congratulations.”
In the U.S., the firm also has offices in Los Angeles, Palo Alto, San Francisco and Chicago, along with a new legal operations center in Tampa.
