While executive churn in the Big Law marketing world may have slowed a bit compared to the previous few months, marketing chiefs aren’t sitting still this summer. The latest move came this week, with Shearman & Sterling hiring former Norton Rose Fulbright CMO Nora Shearer to fill a long-vacant CMO position.
“When I learned of the opportunity, I was immediately interested, given Shearman & Sterling’s reputation, global platform, leading growth strategy and focus on innovation,” New York-based Shearer said in a statement. “Once I met the partners and people on the team, I knew it was the place for me.”
Shearer takes over for the long-departed David McLune, who left for Hogan Lovells back in May 2018. A firm spokesperson said that after McLune left, Kimberly Gardner, Shearman’s executive director of strategy and innovation, covered the workload and worked with senior team members at various offices.
The firm began the search for a new CMO in earnest in early 2019, a firm spokesperson said, looking at candidates both in the legal industry and from other fields before deciding on Shearer.
In addition to overseeing the firm’s marketing efforts, Shearer will also be responsible for the firm’s business development and communication teams, with a total staff between the teams of about 90 people.
“The legal landscape continues to evolve rapidly,” Shearer said in a statement. “The role of business development and marketing teams in winning and retaining business is even more vital.”
Shearer said she intends to continue what the firm has been doing when it comes to coordinating efforts between business development, marketing and communications.
“They have already been operating as an integrated global team, and work closely together on our initiatives so I will just be continuing that approach,” Shearer said in an email.
Shearer said her biggest challenge will be keeping up with evolving industry trends and priorities, such as empowering business development personnel to gain and retain clients. She also said that since Shearman is in a growth mode, integrating lateral partners into the firm’s fold will be a focus.
“Nora has an impressive track record of developing and executing international business development strategies,” said Gardner in a statement. “I am delighted to welcome her to the firm.”
Prior to joining Shearman, Shearer was at Norton Rose for a little over two years, moving from national director of business development and marketing into the CMO role. She previously had stints at Chadbourne & Park as well as DLA Piper.
Norton Rose released a statement saying “We wish Nora all the best in her future endeavors.”
