Matthew Hurlock has left Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher to join White & Case as an M&A partner in New York.
Hurlock, who joined White & Case on Thursday, has worked with some of the biggest players in private equity. Some of his current or former clients include Bain Capital Partners, Change Capital Partners, CVC Capital Partners, Eurazeo, Morgan Stanley Capital Partners, Oaktree Capital, Providence Equity Partners, Vestar Capital Partners and several others, according to his former firm profile.
In an interview, he said that he anticipates many, but perhaps not all, of his existing client base to come with him in the move.
White & Case's strong global presence matched up well with his existing knowledge and client base, he said, adding he was also attracted to the firm's dedication to U.S. expansion.
Hurlock has spent a good deal of time abroad, having lived in London from 2000 through 2011 and has also lived and practiced law in France, Germany and China. While not ruling out another move overseas, he cited a preference to stay stateside going forward.
"I had been practicing in Europe for quite a while," Hurlock said. "After the financial crisis, I realized that the U.S. was going to be the engine that was driving global business, so in 2011 I moved back."
In a statement, John Reiss, global head of White & Case's global M&A practice, called Hurlock a "highly accomplished M&A lawyer with deep experience in private equity and substantial relationships throughout the industry." He added that Hurlock "will play an important role in supporting the continued expansion of our M&A practice and PE group in New York and globally."
Hurlock is the latest addition to White & Case's M&A and private equity practices. The firm said the practices have expanded this year by adding partners Andres Liivak and Hagai Zaifman in New York; Rodrigo Dominguez Sotomayor and William Parish in Houston; William Fong, Steven Sha, Paul Tang and Daniel Yeh in Hong Kong; Grace Fan-Delatour in Beijing, Murad Daghles in Düsseldorf; and most recently, Andrea Novarese and Maria Cristina Storchi in Milan.
Before his time at Gibson Dunn, Hurlock was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis from 2000 through 2014 and an associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell from 1994 through 2000.
