Days before Drinker Biddle & Reath combines with Faegre Baker Daniels, the firm has added four new intellectual property attorneys in Denver, a market where it will soon have even greater reach.
Timothy Scull, Kirstin Stoll-DeBell, Andrew Pouzeshi and Kathleen Ott have all joined as partners, Drinker Biddle announced Monday. They formerly practiced together at Midwest-based IP boutique Merchant & Gould.
The group's move comes just days before Drinker Biddle and Faegre officially merge Feb. 1 to become Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath. The combined firm will have more than 1,300 attorneys based in 22 locations worldwide.
Pre-merger, Drinker Biddle does not have a Denver office of its own, though the firm emphasized that the four partners are joining Drinker Biddle pre-combination. Faegre does have a presence in Denver, as well as a Boulder, Colorado, location, with more than 85 total lawyers between those two offices.
Drinker Biddle declined to make any of its attorneys available for an interview, citing the upcoming merger.
But in a joint statement, Francis DiGiovanni and Robert Stoll, co-chairs of Drinker Biddle's IP practice, said: "Tim, Kirstin, Andy and Kathy have well-established reputations for developing global patent protection strategies for large clients with complex issues. In particular, their collective experience in the technology sector, which continues to be a significant area of growth for Drinker Biddle, builds on our national platform. They have worked very successfully as a team for decades, and this collaborative approach makes them a great fit for our firm."
In a statement, Scull noted the group was specifically excited to join Drinker Biddle as the firm merged with Faegre and praised both firm's IP practices.
"Our team is excited to join Drinker Biddle at the time of this combination with Faegre Baker Daniels," he said. "Everyone we have met at the two firms has confirmed for us that their cultures and values match perfectly with one another, and with our own."
Scull focuses on patent prosecution, patent analysis and trademark work, largely in the software and IT industries; Stoll-DeBell litigates patents and trademarks; Pouzeshi's practice centers on patent prosecution and patent analysis work, also in the software and IT industries; and Ott analyzes patents and protects innovations for clients in the software, medical device and pharmaceutical industries.
Representatives for Merchant & Gould did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday.
