Kirkland Restructuring, Benefits Partners Head to Ropes & Gray in London and Chicago
Matthew Czyzyk in London and Matthew Jones in Chicago are both leaving Kirkland after relatively short stints at the firm.

Ropes & Gray has hired a restructuring partner from Kirkland & Ellis in its second London hire in a month, as well as another Kirkland partner in Chicago.
Matthew Czyzyk joins Ropes & Gray after two years as a partner at Kirkland. He joined in early 2018 from Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, where he had been a senior associate.
His hire comes shortly after Ropes hired London-based Linklaters asset management partner Tom Alabaster as its new head of Europe, Middle East and Africa funds in May. In 2019, the firm brought on board O'Melveny & Myers funds partner Eve Ellis and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld financial services contentious regulatory partner Rosemarie Paul.
David Djaha, managing partner of Ropes & Gray, said in a statement: "Our business restructuring team is seeing ever-increasing levels of activity, as companies and investors grapple with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Matt will play a key role in strengthening our global restructuring and special situations offering."
Will Rosen, managing partner of Ropes & Gray's London office, added: "Our strategy remains focused on the areas that play to our strengths as a firm, and we will continue to invest in areas such as funds and restructuring, as well as PE and finance."
Also joining Ropes & Gray as a new partner is Matthew Jones, an executive compensation and employee benefits specialist based in Chicago. Jones advises private equity firms and large companies on compensation and benefits aspects of M&A transactions; IPOs; take-privates; spinoffs; divestitures; and carveouts, He was at Kirkland & Ellis for less than a year and a half after joining from K&L Gates.
"Ropes & Gray's executive compensation and benefits lawyers are best in the world, and the experience and knowledge that Matt Jones brings to our team enhances the outstanding service provided to clients on their most challenging issues," said Djaha.
Czyzyk and Jones weren't the only partners spread between Chicago and London to swap firms Monday. The same day, Faegre Drinker Biddle and Reath announced it had hired a pair of leading Sidley Austin restructuring partners in the same two cities.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024.
