The legal sector added nearly 5,000 jobs over the month of October as the U.S. unemployment rate dipped to 6.9%, according to the latest jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The figures mark the sixth straight month of increases to the category, which is comprised of attorneys, paralegals, legal secretaries and others who make their living in the law. The number of legal jobs in the U.S. now sits at 1,117,400.

That's still well below the 1,153,700 jobs in place back in October 2019. Like the wider economy, the legal industry is clearly still recovering from the loss of 64,000 jobs in April, the result of pandemic-related layoffs and austerity measures.
