Law firm revenues and profits are easily quantifiable, as this time of year—when the Am Law 100 debuts—makes us well aware.

Other law firm characteristics, though, are not. We hear often about law firms’ culture. Midsize firms, in particular, take pride in their culture, believing it to be forged with stronger materials than at their Big Law counterparts. The very notion of culture is nebulous—it can mean everything and nothing—but as we like to say, good culture isn’t identifiable until you’ve worked somewhere with bad culture.
