Commercial filings increased in June as small business owners take advantage of the Chapter 11 subchapter V debt limit extension. Meanwhile, bankruptcy leaders predict those businesses that don't survive the pandemic will file in late 2021 or early 2022.

After four months of continual decline, commercial Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings rebounded by 42% in June, while all commercial chapter filings increased by 11%, according to Epiq Systems' AACER bankruptcy information services. Despite the recent uptick, commercial and all-chapter bankruptcies were significantly depressed in the first half of 2021 compared with the same period in 2020.
