Warning signs pertaining to lateral candidates have increased since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to research by a firm providing prehire due diligence for law firms. Nearly one-third of all lateral candidates in 2022 tracked by Decipher Investigative Intelligence came with different types of “red flags.”

The 29% of candidates investigated by Decipher that had red flags last year marked a slight decrease from 2020 and 2021; in those years, Decipher found 34% and 32%, respectively, of candidates had such warning signs. But in all three years, the number of candidates with red flags were higher than in 2019, when only 21% were found to have such warning signs.
