Immigration cases take up a significant portion of the pro bono work that law firms handle on a yearly basis, in part because of the personal nature of the work, but also due to unmet need from partner organizations across the country and the flexibility to fit the work within the demands of lawyers’ billable work.

As part of The American Lawyer’s Pro Bono Scorecard, Am Law 200 firms submitted examples of key pro bono cases they handled the previous year. In 2023, a substantial number of the nearly 120 firms that responded cited immigration cases, with a notable number being asylum cases involving Afghan refugees.
