Don Liu, who was born in South Korea in 1962 and immigrated with his family to the United States a decade later, retired last month as chief legal and compliance officer of Target, one of the largest companies in the world, a career ascent that almost seems to bewilder Liu.

"I'm just a poor immigrant boy who [when I] grew up … I never imagined I would wind up being the chief legal officer of a Fortune 50 company," he said. "I didn't even know what that was when I started my career. I'm just a lucky guy."
