Every new generation of attorneys brings with it new challenges. But this generation of lawyers, born with computers in their cribs, is markedly different from the current law firm leaders, who are what one might call “technology immigrants.” They grew up in a very different, less technological world. Today’s newly minted attorneys are comfortable with keyboarding, getting their own phone messages, scheduling appointments – tasks their partners delegate.

As a consequence, the administrative support services for the new lawyers needs to be rethought. For example, the secretarial role needs to expand to take on new tasks such as basic research and editing, client billing, and assisting with practice area and group administration. The secretary can become a quality control manager-assisting attorneys in completing assignments, delegating work without abdicating responsibility for getting it done correctly. The shared goal is to safeguard the attorney’s time.
