On February 14, 2008, Weil, Gotshal & Manges securities litigation cohead Joseph Allerhand was invited to discuss American International Group Inc.’s subprime-related securities cases with senior executives of the company. Allerhand knew that opportunity beckoned. “It was the single most important pitch we were going to make in a year,” Allerhand says. So he decided to talk to AIG not just about its subprime docket, but about all of the problems the company faced as a result of the economic meltdown. He brought along a young structured finance partner to discuss AIG’s portfolio of credit default swaps, and former Securities and Exchange commissioner Harvey Goldschmid to talk about the company’s regulatory issues.
