What’s the old saying about biting the hand that feeds you? It appears that some law firm recruiters have been ignoring it. Over the past year, Cravath, Swaine & Moore; Lewis, Brisbois, Bisgaard & Smith; Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe; and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker have all been sued by recruiters who claim they’re due a fee for helping bring new hires aboard at the law firms.
The recruiters are facing long odds, as demonstrated by a case brought by New York–based recruiter Eric Sivin. In 2006 Sivin and another recruiter presented the same lawyer to two different Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld offices. The other recruiter got the fee, Sivin got nothing, and Akin Gump got a summons.
